May Day is Lei Day

I got to watch part of Laie school's annual May Day dance festival, and it was wonderful. My favorite was definitely the fourth or fifith grade presentation on British pop culture- they had James Bond, the Royal British guard, Austin Powers, the Beatles, the Spice Girls, and David Beckham. How rad!

Other favorites included the African tribesmen (I may have had some sliiiight thoughts about sterotypes, etc) dancing to Michael Jackson, and the Indian dance.

Mainland is kinda boring in a lot of ways in comparison.

  1. Our Lei Day festivals were always hula. I see the royal court in your pictures, and all the kahili. How did they integrate the international theme?

If you want to talk about stereotypes, James, Torri & I went to Aria's elementary school performance of Pocahontas yesterday- complete with kids wearing their hair in mohawks. Aria missed the cue that all the performers were supposed to go out to the lobby to wait for their fans while the director gave his thank-you speech. Rather than follow everyone else, she stayed right there in front of the stage and did the "Vanna" thing as he called people to the front. It was hilarious!
